The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) has been commissioned by GIZ’s EU Support to SLM project to implement a project entitled: “Bale Mountains Eco-Region Project: Strengthening livelihoods and ecosystem services in the southern watersheds of the Bale Mountains”
FZS have been contracted by GIZ to trial. The project focusses on three lowland woredas adjacent to Bale Mountains National Park. The project is implementing a multi-sectoral, integrated, context specific landscape scale approach linking sustainable forest and rangeland management with rehabilitation of degraded pasture, livelihood interventions and population health and the environment. This seeks to promote the conservation of natural resources while strengthening livelihoods to reduce further encroachment, deforestation, farm land and grazing expansion into the core and buffer zones of the Bale Mountains National Park (BMNP) and therefore protect the water tower function of Bale and its biodiversity.
In the same woredas, GIZ is implementing watershed based SLM measures and providing technical support on institutional capacity development to the zone, woreda and kebele level focussing on the restoration of degraded land and efficient use of resources in the lowlands. FZS is commissioning this study to inform a potential future SLM programme for the lowlands.
